Dr. Megha Tyagi, a former SMUS Post-Doctoral Fellow (2022), won the prestigious MSCA Fellowship (2023) for her project "DigiPACK." This project explores using digital tools to include children in urban planning for active neighbourhoods in Delhi, India. Dr. Tyagi's perfect-scoring proposal highlights the significance of SoftGIS, an internet-based mapping system, to gather children's experiences and localised knowledge. The two-year project, starting in 2025, aims to revolutionize participatory planning with children in India and beyond.

An Indo-German planning workshop in Bhubaneswar (India) was conducted in February 2024 by TU Berlin and School of Architecture and Planning (KSAP), KIIT University. It explored integrating Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) into the city's mobility network. Students and professionals from Berlin and Bhubaneswar collaborated to develop innovative solutions for Bhubaneswar's specific challenges, prioritizing pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. The workshop included presentations, discussions, site visits, and design activities, fostering knowledge sharing and proposing BGI interventions for a more sustainable and people-centric neighbourhood in Bhubaneswar.

The SARDC Teaching on-site workshop took place from October 2nd to 6th, 2023, at the Great Zimbabwe historical site. The workshop allowed students from three SMUS partner universities to acquire new theoretical knowledge, learn about responsible research practices, gain exposure to archaeological sites, interact with advanced academics and learn about the importance of stakeholder and community engagement. The workshop also benefited the more advanced researchers in the group by strengthening their teaching skills, facilitating knowledge sharing amongst peers, and facilitating greater interdisciplinary understanding and cooperation.

This is an innovative South-South collaboration of three SMUS partner universities: Midlands State University in Zimbabwe, the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, the University of Pretoria in South Africa, and SMUS extramural partner SARDC’s History Institute. The project team is working on strengthening the development of teaching research skills in Southern and Eastern African universities by co-designing a teaching program to address their research project topic - “ARC 420 Research Project Sustainable Cities Past and Present – Lessons from Pre-colonial Urban Settlements in Africa”.

As part of the Practical-Empirical Implementation Project (PEIP) Ethnography on the Kolkata Wetlands: Historically Enriched Relevant Intervention through ‘Toolkit’ Aided Grassroots Engagement (HERITAGE), on August 27, 2023, the PEIP team organized the academia-practitioner engagement workshop in Kolkata. Aim of this workshop was to discuss sustainable pathways for the East Kolkata Wetlands by critically reflecting on the application and efficacy of the SMUS toolkit. Diverse groups of practitioners participated and engaged with the school students, who have been actively participating in the execution of the PEIP, in actuating the third phase of the PEIP: its actual Practical Empirical Implementation.

The video showcases the ‘ethno-graphic’ approach as an agency-induced participatory tool, fostering transdisciplinarity in (urban) socioecological research and actions. It applies lessons from practical projects to validate the novelty of the framework. The approach is aligned to the PEIP agenda of using ethnography and visualization techniques in exploring urban space, and advancing urban sustainability especially for complex urbanscapes of the global South.

On June 26, 2023, the PEIP team on East Kolkata Wetlands, participated in a round table discussion in the “Youth for Climate” programme at the American Center. The wetland students reflected on their everyday lived spatialities, captured through applying the SMUS toolkit via co-learning sessions organized during the first two phases of PEIP execution – 1. Data Collection, and 2. Analysis. They discussed the methods they had applied – from photography to interviews, participatory mapping, etc.. They shared why these outreach activities should be part of the school curricula to spread ecological awareness among the youth.

Between August and September 2022, the ECLAC Planning, Government and Development network held the discussion forum “Differential approach in the formulation of public policies for development and territorial planning” and in its publication “Planning for sustainable territorial development in Latin America and the Caribbean” (2019), reviews the evolution of public policies in the region from local, then regional and now territorial development, and identifies diversity, the rights-based approach, sustainability and inequality as emerging issues to be addressed in the formulation and management of public policies for territorial development. The roundtable seeks to revisit these issues through the notion of “differential approach”.
