Most of the problems that urban areas are facing today are complex and interconnected. So-called WICKED URBAN PROBLEMS cannot be solved in a linear way, nor can they be addressed from one perspective or worldview. A transdisciplinary approach has become key.
For academia, this means that the comfort zones of disciplinary or even university boundaries need to be breached, a process which has started in smaller pockets but still has a long process to go.
In the soundclips below, SMUS partners and their collaborators share their points of view on transdisciplinarity, on the challenges this poses in their universities, on the skills that students need to be better prepared for transdisciplinary work, etc. The first bunch are from short interviews that were held in November 2023 at the Semarang workshop “Measuring Urban Resilience.”
